THE MILLIONTH MILE

The single-file line of pine trees standing

Tall upon the hill I’m passing

Guide the way to where I need to be

Along the ridge where forest meets the road.

I follow them into the valley low.

Now the pines surround me

And the smell of earth abounds

I only hope that I am never found again.

For in the depth of my retreat,

I finally find that I can be

Exactly who I always thought I’d be…

Then suddenly, I’m overtaken

By the realization

That the millionth mile will be the longest yet.

But I could walk another million still.

So, when night comes knocking down

The sunbeams spread across the ground

I’ll still be upon the

Millionth mile.

And should the sky begin to leak

Spilling out its soul to me

The treetop canopy will come to meet

Protecting me

And I’ll still be upon the

Millionth mile.

And if a friend

Should call to me

From far beyond the line of trees

I’ll promise I’ll shout back just for a while.

But I’m not stopping

I’ll keep walking

Even when the night comes knocking,

If the sky is shred to pieces, falling,

I keep walking

And I could walk another million still.
